Native title law across North Queensland
David Saylor has represented Traditional Owner groups across North Queensland since 2003. His Townsville base means he is well-placed to serve communities from the coastal determination areas around Townsville to the Far North, Cape York Peninsula, the Gulf Country and the Torres Strait.
North Queensland is a significant region in the history of native title in Australia. A substantial number of determination areas are located in the region, and many of the foundational consent determinations of the past three decades involved North Queensland claim groups.
The Federal Court in North Queensland
The Federal Court of Australia, Queensland District Registry, has jurisdiction over native title matters arising from North Queensland. For communities in remote areas, the Federal Court’s capacity to sit on country is an important feature of the native title process. Consent determination hearings held on country have particular significance for claim groups: the law comes to them, on their Country, to acknowledge their rights.
David has attended on-country hearings and understands the logistical and cultural considerations that go into organising them.
